Internal Company Blog – Juneteenth
Recognizing Juneteenth and Announcing our New ERG
In the United States, Juneteenth or Emancipation Day is a federal holiday that recognizes June 19, 1865, as the day enslaved people in Texas were finally informed that they were free—over two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation purportedly ending slavery on January 1, 1863.
Company X recognizes the long struggle of the black community against oppression and discrimination and the lack of support for and understanding of the black experience.
We know that it’s not enough not to be racist. That’s why our company is taking action to put in place procedures and structures to ensure that black employees have equal opportunities in the workplace. We’re re-examining our hiring practices and internal biases to ensure equity and accountability.
You may recall that in 2021, Company X started its inclusion and diversity (I&D) program. Our intent through this program is to help Company X employees and leaders see and understand the benefits, challenges, and rewards of incorporating aspects of inclusion, diversity, equity, and belonging into our everyday decision-making. Part of our I&D goals is to grow and create Employee Resource Groups (ERGs). ERGs give voice to collective lived experiences for groups of employees who may not have been heard.
I’m happy to announce our first Black / African American ERG just launched. Company X’s Jane Smith is the sponsor for the effort, with support from John Jones. On their behalf, I’m putting out a call to action for others to join the group. Please note that membership and participation are open to all—meaning that non-Black employees would also be welcome to join this new ERG as allies and advocates.
To connect with or join this ERG, please contact X at X.
What this and other ERGs will do is up to the group members and leader, though some broad ideas have been developed and will be shared with those interested in joining.
As Company X matures in this space, other ERGs will be considered for groups also looking to organize for their communities. The Inclusion & Diversity microsite will have information on starting an ERG shorty.
We, unfortunately, cannot change the past. However, we can work hard to provide fair and inclusive opportunities for all employees and create meaningful connections and pathways.
Thank you,
Company X CEO
